 THE MIXTAPE ISSUE !
( Who is really hurt by them?)

The sell of bootleg mixed tapes in the dancehall industry has become so prevalent that I think lots of consumers don't even know it's illegal to buy them.  There's something about being able to get all your favorite songs on one tape without having to by a bunch of album, or record singles for hours on the radio, that make the purchase of a bootleg mixed tape almost irresistible.  But who are we hurting by doing this?  Obviously someone is losing money. Is it the record labels or the artists?  Most people would be more sympathetic about an artist losing money then a record label.  After all it's the artist the fans love.

After the whole scandal with______ a lot of people have put a new face on who gets that dollars for the sale of records.  I think a lot of fans thought if a record had a lot of sales, the artist got rich.  But after ____ fans realized that a lot of times an artist only gets paid on the initial sale of a song to a record label.  They get little or nothing from actual record sales.  I think this fact has made some fans feel justified in buying bootleg mixed tapes.  But I think an artist who doesn't own the rights to their songs might still be affected by illegal mixed tapes.  Consider this: record labels are out to make money, this is after all a business, they might base whether they give an artist a future contract on how many albums were sold.  If record sales drop because the majority of fans buy bootleg mix tapes, then the artists we have come to love might go hungry.  It's a possibility that lack of sales could cause an artist to never get the opportunity to make another record again.

I know money is tight for everyone, but we have to ask ourselves, how much is the talent of these artists worth.  These artists are people we will probably never see in real life or get a chance to talk to.  The only way they know their music is appreciated is through records sales.  We don't want artists to think all their hard work and struggling is in vain.   A conscience decision must be made before we purchase another mixed tape.  Ask yourself how much you value the music you listen to.
